Known for utilizing superior European stones, crystal beads, and intricate metalwork, it was marketed as a luxury, "couturier" line. It grew in popularity during the 1960s under designer Helen Marion before closing in 1979. Vendome is known for high-quality Austrian and Czechoslovakian rhinestones, faceted beads, and Lucite. Designs often featured floral, geometric, or bold gold-plated looks.
I remember going to the Vendome Shop on the top floor of Kaufmann's Department store in downtown Pittsburgh. My mother and I wore our white gloves and best coat and hat. The shop was glorious. I of was a little girl in the 1950's and what stands out in my memory were the life size porcelain animals - huge dogs in particular. When my mother needed a dress for a special occasion her go to was the Vendome shop. They had ginormous lighted glass display cases where the jewelry was displayed. This piece is in awesome - just like new condition.
